Minting as a Service: The Turnkey Web3 Growth Engine

Orange Domains is a joint venture between Trust Machines and Hiro Systems, powerhouses in the Bitcoin ecosystem, Tucows Inc., one of the world's premier registry backend providers, and DISH Network (an EchoStar company). Orange Domains is the ICANN-accredited registry for .locker, a Web3-interoperable domain name that’s already bridging the gap between legacy infrastructure and the decentralized future.

Our Minting as a Service (MaaS) white-label solution allows registry operators to offer a seamless Web3 experience while still maintaining full Web2 functionality. MaaS transforms standard .tld domain names into high-utility, multi-chain digital identities that are minted on Bitcoin and resolve on Ethereum. Support for Solana is coming soon, ensuring your .tld remains relevant across the most active blockchain communities. MaaS isn’t just a technical bridge to Web3. It’s a strategic evolution that gives your registrants a new reason to register, engage with, and renew your .tld.

Why MaaS?

By lowering the barrier to entry for registrars and offering an automated synchronization, you aren't just selling a domain. You're selling a .tld with future-proof utility that justifies higher premiums and drives better retention.

⚖️

Regulatory Peace of Mind

Designed around ICANN’s framework with no DNS changes required.

Zero Friction Distribution

Standard .tld integration via Tucows backend with no new technical requirements for registrars.

👤

Seamless Experience

We’ve removed the complexities of blockchain technology for a seamless, simple user experience.

🌐

Built With Web3 Values

Empower users with true digital identity ownership and blockchain utility with one unified .tld name.

🔄

Lifecycle Management

MaaS’ DNS Sync App automatically keeps everything in lockstep, including renewals and transfers- all without any extra fees.

⛓️

Multi-Chain Reach

Mint digital identities on Bitcoin, resolve on ENS for Ethereum, and coming soon- resolve on SNS for Solana!

MaaS: The Technical Overview

MaaS is a complete solution consisting of three main components that work together to create the ultimate “future-proof” .tld domain name.

📝

DNS Registration Services

Register and manage DNS .tld names with Tucows Registry Services.

🔄

DNS Sync Application

Bridges the .tld domain names and the .tld digital identities. Responsible for registering, managing, and synchronizing digital identities with their DNS .tld counterparts.

🧠

Smart Contract

Acts as the gateway to Web3 by registering names on the core .locker BNS contract in a process known as “minting,” officially establishing .tld digital identities on Bitcoin.

DNS Sync Application

The powerful proprietary app from Orange Domains that:
  • -Registers and manages the digital identity
  • -Maintains the ownership relation between the Web2 owner and the Web3 owner
  • -Synchronizes the lifecycles of the Web2 and Web3 domains (renewals, transfers, deletions)
  • -Ensures renewal times for the Web2 and Web3 domains are synchronized
  • -Monitors all transactions for the .tld smart contract and updates domain ownership records

.tld Smart Contract

Built on Stacks, a Bitcoin scaling solution that enables:
  • -Permissioned digital wallet addresses to freely mint .tld digital identities
  • -Registration "approvals" that determine availability and pricing (Premium, Standard, Reserved)
  • -Digital Identity Status Management to determine if a .tld name is registered, expired, deleted, suspended, locked, or a registrant email needs syncing

MaaS User Flow

Web2 .tld domain name registration is conducted through ICANN-accredited registrars, following the standard TLD registration procedure. The only difference is that to mint and manage the corresponding .tld digital identities, Orange Domains requires a valid registrant email address (no proxies allowed, though privacy services can still be offered by registrars).

1

Register Domain

User registers a domain name through an ICANN-accredited registrar with a valid registrant email address.

2

Domain Confirmation

The DNS registration is completed and confirmed through the standard registrar process.

3

Sync Application Triggered

The MaaS Sync Application detects the new domain registration and reserves the .tld name in the BNS and ENS namespaces, with SNS coming soon.

4

Digital Wallet Setup

The user is prompted via email to set up or connect a Bitcoin-compatible digital wallet to claim their digital identity. MaaS walks users through this process using digital wallets like Leather or Xverse.

5

Digital Identity is Minted

The user's name is minted on Bitcoin, officially making it their digital identity. They can now add an Ethereum address to the .tld app to connect with the ENS resolver, view transactions, and more..

6

Ongoing Sync

The Web2 domain and digital identity remain synchronized for renewals, transfers, and status changes- all without any extra fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MaaS?
MaaS is a white-label solution for .tld registry providers that bridges a Web2 .tld domain name along with its corresponding Web3 digital identity. For example, a user can claim john.tld as a domain name and obtain john.tld as a corresponding Web3 digital identity on the Bitcoin blockchain. MaaS also allows users to add an Ethereum address to use their .tld digital identity with decentralized applications using the ENS resolver.
Why MaaS for my .tld?
MaaS bridges Web2 .tld domains with Web3 .tld digital identities for Web3-curious and Web3-ready users who want the full functionality of their domain name (website, email) with a corresponding Web3 digital identity for one unified name across both ecosystems. This unlocks full control and ownership of identity for the end user, and a new market for your .tld.
Do users need a digital wallet?
Yes. Because Web3 digital identities are minted on the Bitcoin blockchain as an NFT, they must reside in a digital wallet. Digital wallets are the foundation of a user’s Web3 experience. If a user already has a Bitcoin network compatible wallet, they can use it for their .tld digital identity. If they don't have one, Orange Domains will guide them through setting up and using their first Bitcoin compatible wallet (such as Leather or Xverse).
What is a digital wallet?
A digital wallet is an application that allows users to securely store, send, and receive digital assets like NFTs, tokens, badges, and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ether, and others. A digital wallet stores the private keys required to access and manage one's digital asset holdings.
How do .tld digital identity renewals work?
.tld domains are renewed at the registrar of record where the domain name is currently managed. Once the domain name is renewed with the registrar, the Web3 digital identity will also be renewed via the DNS Sync Application without any additional payment from the end user.
Can the .tld digital identity be transferred or sold?
Yes. A domain name can be transferred or sold to another person like any domain name. Once a registrant email is changed through a sale or transfer, a new corresponding and updated Web3 digital identity will be issued to the new user.
What’s ENS, BNS, and SNS? Are they similar to DNS?
Yes, ENS, BNS, and SNS are similar to DNS but for their own platforms. ENS is the Ethereum Name System. MaaS is integrated with the ENS resolver, meaning digital identities can be used on Ethereum dApps that support the resolver. BNS is Bitcoin Name System. MaaS mints .tld names on Bitcoin as an NFT, but it also registers .tld names with BNS. SNS is the Solana Name System, which is coming soon. MaaS’ integration with these name systems reduces the chances of name collision.
Who do users contact for support?
For domain name support, users contact the registrar where the domain is currently managed. For Web3 digital identity support, contact Orange Domains has a specialized support team to assist with any issues.
